Walk Cycle 1

Walk Cycle 1
Pencil Animation Test
Runtime: 5 Seconds
----
This is my Character Flintlock Jones  and his walk cycle. I did a lot of experimenting with it. I tried to make him seem confident in the motion. Hopefully that shows through.
Im also in love with the fire loop I have. I wish it was a little longer, but its pretty cool for only 12 frames

Weight and Impact Exercise

Weight and Impact Exercise - Made 2011
Pencil Animation Test
Runtime: 20 Seconds
----
Assignment I had to make for my principals of Animation class at KCAI.
For this assignment we were to animate 3 separate objects of different weight. We had about 2 weeks to finish and there is a lot of secondary animation to it. mostly smoke and the feather through out the clip.

I really like how the feather sort of developed into the main protagonist through out the animation. Sort of a David and Goliath tale.

N64 Controller

N64 Controller - Made: 2011
72x52"
Chalk and Pastel on Butcher Paper
----
Made during my Large Scale Drawing Workshop here at KCAI
Probably the only piece I'm extremely proud of my freshman year. I spent over 2 weeks working on this. and I feel the work shows.
The hardest part about the piece was getting the proportions of the curves right, and capturing the opaqueness of the controller.

CvE - WIP

(PREVIEW IMAGE)
Cody Vs Erika WIP - Made: 2011-2012
Flash Animation
Runtime: around 30 seconds
----
A fan made animation for my childhood game Pokemon, and my friend Erika.
While this animation is still a work in progress, yet I feel that it is an important staple to shown how much I've grown since the release of ERROAR. A 4 year difference and I feel I have improved immensely.

V's Resurrection

V's Resurrection - Made 2009
16x12
Ink and Watercolor on Paper
----
Yet another concept piece for my Flintlock Jones Universe.
This is picture of the main bad guy finally being resurrected after about a 100 year slumber. he is surrounded by his 3 faithful minions who have been taking care of business while their boss was away.
V is just a working title for him at the moment.
I really love watercolor and Ink, and I wish I had more resources to play around with it more often.

Crispy

Crispy - Made 2009
Still Life
14x10"
----
Nothing really much to say about this. Made during my senior year of high school.
Very murky. The picture does not do the piece itself justice.

ERROAR

 (PREVIEW IMAGE)
ERROAR - Made: April , 2009
Flash Video
Runtime: 2:07
----
This is my first finished animation. This was submitted to Newgrounds.com, a flash website and community. The animation was given Front Page Honors as well as a Daily Second Award. Both are very prestigious to an aspiring animator.
I did not expect the animation to be such a hit to the community. But the amount of attention it gained definitely validated what I wanted to, and inspired me to push further.

Eventide: Al's Diner

Eventide: Al's Diner - Made: 2009
10x10
Ink on Paper
----
Concept art for my fictional city Eventide. Part of my Flintlock Jones universe. A quirky story about a Paranormal Investigator searching for his identity in a 50's Cold War Era Eastern Coast City.

I mostly want to express my aesthetic/humor/style/timing/process/etc. Really any variable that pertains to my personality or work.

I also want this blog to act as an archive for inspiration for possible fans and a my future self.

Artist Bio/About the Artwork

My name is Cody Hawley
I am currently studying animation at KCAI as of Sept. 2011.
I have been animating for over 6 years now, and I have been drawing for much longer than that.
My first comic was made sometime in 3rd grade, featuring two very simple, geometric brothers: Spike and Archie. One wearing blue and the other orange, respectively. They were heavily inspired by Bill Watterson's "Calvin & Hobbes" comics, with a  pinch of Danny Antonucci's "Ed Edd n Eddy" and Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Lab". Spike and Archie begat my longest running idea baby, the Chaos Chronicles (which was inspired from Spaceman Spiff). The Chaos Chronicles is my most well known series between my oldest and greatest friends.
After Chaos came an explosion of creativity, and a great need to fabricate every idea's world. The amount of creativity generated increased tenfold when I started collaborating with my friends, and taking my own creations further by actually giving them movement by teaching myself Flash.
I would love to start an independent studio with them all, and share with the world what we are capable of creating.

--

Most of the artwork is geared towards making a TV show or even something as small as a Flash series. Concepts to fleshing out their universe, understanding how they interact with one another, and generally try to create something original and pick at it and feel where it can pull the entire idea of the universe in different directions. I have hundreds of ideas, and I constantly add and subtract from each one to fine tune to perfection, and hopefully have a masterpiece from the foundation up; from start to finish. So its not about the finished piece as an end product, but a finished piece as a whole. Its about the processes and steps I took to reach a polished and desired creation.

Industry Sites & Blogs

I follow several sites and blogs on the internet. A couple of which have been mentioned on my previous post, being newgrounds.com and deviantart.com

DeviantArt is essentially a  free portfolio site for any and all artists. A user can post works of art, videos, photos, links, Html customizable journal entries, post in the forums, and critique works of art submitted by other users. But due to some licensing issues, the site refuses to host music, user made or otherwise.
DeviantArt is also a community, and often hold contests sponsored by big corporations and give out big prizes.
The number of users that utilize the site is immense. Art that is submitted is separated into two groups: Newly Submitted and Popular; In these two groups the art can be categorized into medium, and genre, and can be further broken down from there through several subcategories.
Due to the number of artists and incoming pieces, its nigh impossible to get any attention without resorting to buying ad space, or updating frequently to catch attention on the newly submitted page; Although, the least time and resource consuming way to gain attention is through word of mouth.

Newgrounds is much more niche than Deviantart. Its another free site whose users consists of Flash animators, programmers, musicians, and people who visit the site frequently to rate and vote on newly submitted flash animations - a key feature to the site. Newgrounds has a feed of incoming games and animations that the users can vote on, which either "Blams" (deletes the submission from the site) or raise its score which could potentially post the project on the site's front page; ensuring that every new project gets an even amount of attention
Newgrounds also has the same features as Deviantart, minus the customiz-ability of journal entries.

Newgrounds' Admins often sponsor or host contests with cash or prize rewards, as well as the users who want to get together and just collaborate. The site is very community driven, so long as one participates in the community (even minimally), it is not hard at all to get attention.
Newgrounds is built for its users, and promotes the best, or at least hard work, in the most user friendly way, which is a big plus for any aspiring artist.

Research Prosite/Wordpress

Between the two sites, Prosite and Wordpress, I chose Wordpress.

  • A big choice behind my decision was the fact that if you wanted to use Prosite, you would have to pay a monthly fee to keep your site live, when I can go to numerous other sites to post my work/portfolio that happen to be free
  • Wordpress also gives myself more control over the design of my site, but also simple to use a premade layout and design.
  • I'm not worried about talent scouts or searching parties for my work. I'd rather just have a place place to archive my work, than pay money to show up in a search bar.
  • I guess another decision factor is that I already have a Wordpress account haha

Hello. Nothing really much to say about me. But I suppose I can start off with some basics.

I am an aspiring animator and I have been animating since freshman year of high school. I have only one finished animation, which was completed my sophomore year of high school. It has been posted on Newgrounds.com, a tightly knit Flash community, and I received front page honors as well as a "Daily Second" Award from the site admins and users.
In between that time and now, I have started and stopped several animations, due to uncontrollable events and lack of resources; namely voice actors.

But a short term goal for myself is to start a flash series, and if it becomes popular or if people demand more from myself, its all a bonus.

As of long term goals, I want to start my own independent animation studio, under the same name as this blog. The name is inspired from my first 2 characters I have ever created way back in elementary school, in small episodic comics I made in my spare time. The two characters are the reason for where I am and who I am today.

This blog, I plan to use as a portfolio basically. Post finished works, give artist statements on them, etc. etc.
But I also want to use this site as an archive. There is nothing I love more than digging through old pieces of my favorite artists and gather inspiration from them. To know their roots and see how they developed. And if my dreams take me where I hope, maybe fans of my work will have plenty to dig through some day also.

I do have a separate art blog for my animation classes. I will be posting doodles and sketches on there, through out the semester. So be sure to check it out!

I also have a deviant art, which is used for the same thing, but its a bit more expressive and informal.
